According to Government sponsored research:

A new question was added to the start of the wave 5 questionnaire, which asked respondents how much they would trust a list of different organisations to keep their personal details safe.

Banks/building societies had the highest proportion of respondents who said that they trusted them strongly (34%), followed closely by the Identity and Passport Service (32%). The organisations who were least trusted (distrust slightly/strongly) were social networking sites (54%) followed by the government (53%) and by online retailers (41%).

Only 53%?
