Why trust this MP to talk about security and procedures?

Kali Mountford (Colne Valley, Labour) spoke recently in a debate about the missing discs.

Some people have short memories.

After Mr Touhig admitted receiving a photo-copy of a draft report from a member of the Social Security Committee, the Standards and Privileges Committee chairman Robert Sheldon wrote to all the committee members asking if they had been responsible.

They all replied that they had not been. Ms Mountford who wrote: “My answer is no, I did not“.

But after the investigation had been completed, she wrote again to Mr Sheldon admitting that it had been her and resigning her membership of the Social Security Committee.

I love Parliamentary language, by the way – from the Eleventh Report, on the Unauthorised Receipt of a Draft Report of the Social Security Committee:

Before our Report was published Ms Kali Mountford, a member of the Social Security Committee, realised that the response she had made to our enquiries had not been accurate.

Thank you for your letter of 15th July 1999. You asked, “Did you give Mr Touhig a copy of the report” [she responded “no I did not” – ed]. I regret to say that I did allow him sight of my copy of the draft of the child benefit report to Don Touhig MP and I offer my full apologies to you for having done so.
